Maximiliano Soto Mayorga
Maximiliano Soto Mayorga (*1991) is a composer renowned for his work in instrumental music, music theatre, and collective creation.
He studied composition in Chile with Rafael Díaz Silva and Jorge Martínez Ulloa, and in Germany with Johannes Schöllhorn. Masterclasses with Carola Bauckholt, Luca Belcastro, and Annesley Black complemented his education. Since 2025 he is a graduate student in the Composition program at Harvard.
Awards include, among others, the Busoni Composition Prize from the Berlin Academy of Arts (2024), the Munich Biennale Open Call (2025), IBERMÚSICAS (2023), TONALi20 (2020, with a jury chaired by Sofia Gubaidulina), DAAD (2018), and the Chilean Academy of Fine Arts (Carlos Riesco Prize, 2016). His work aimed at children and youth has twice received the Ad Libitum Prize from the Winfried Böhler Cultural Foundation (2022 & 2024).
Soto Mayorga has built an international career, with over 60 works premiered across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He has collaborated with ensembles such as the SWR Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Aventure, and Ensemble Katrof. His music has been featured at festivals including the Munich Biennale (Germany/Austria), EstOvest (Italy), Open Ears (Canada), ENSEMS (Spain), and Forum Neuer Musik (Germany), among others. He has held residencies at institutions such as the SWR Experimentalstudio (2026), Künstlerdorf Schöppingen (2024), and Akademie Musiktheater Heute (2024–26).
His catalogue includes symphonic works such as ROTO (2024) and Lindes (2021), both premiered by the SWR Symphony Orchestra, as well as music-theatrical works such as Affenzungen (2026, Katrof Ensemble), Xochiyaoyotl (2025, Munich Biennale), and Hundekolloquium (2023, Trio Clash). His music has been published by Sikorski–Boosey & Hawkes and Editorial Nacional (Chile).
